Friday 31 October at 8.00pmMelbourne acoustic ensemble My Friend the Chocolate Cake, featuring David Bridie from internationally acclaimed band Not Drowning Waving, perform their trademark emotive musical pieces that move from subtle chamber instrumentals to acoustic pop for one night only at Kingston Arts Centre.
Their name alone should have ensured a quiet life for My Friend the Chocolate Cake, but instead they have carved out a 15 year, five album history winning ARIA awards, performing two years of sold-out Edinburgh Festival dates and developing the kind of ageless and eternally devoted audience most bands with cooler names would kill for. ‘There’s humour, insight and, in some cases, a sharp political edge to some of them (songs) but it’s a joy to be reminded what can happen when half a dozen (give or take) like-minded Melburnians shelter from the cold and fire up their instruments to keep warm’. ABC Radio ‘Lush string textures are offset by tight snappy rhythms; the arrangements, however fulsome, carry no excess flash. A decidedly different, but artfully intriguing collection’. The Guardian
